To further prevent predatory lending in the future, I support stronger predatory lending laws, stronger penalties for violations, including criminal penalties for certain conduct, and more resources for state enforcement by the Illinois Attorney General and the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.
Finally, I support deeper state investment in the Neighborhood Stabilization Program to renovate and re-market foreclosed homes in order to stop decline in neighborhood home values.
Other Affordable Housing Needs and Initiatives
The foreclosure crisis has caused not only the loss of single-family homes; it has also accelerated the loss of affordable rental housing in Chicago, leaving families with fewer affordable housing options. Illinois can do more to preserve and expand the stock of affordable rental housing.
I also support an expansion of resources to foster the development of housing cooperatives throughout the state. For so many poor people, a housing cooperative is the only ownership option that will ever be affordable. Ownership gives people a personal financial stake in their housing and a sense of pride that public housing cannot give.
I support the development of sustainable, mixed-income communities. CHA residents should receive all of the support they need to successfully transition to and live in mixed-income developments.
I support an expansion of resources to care for homeless people, including homeless youth.
